Tropical Trial - Braid Anderson
Braid Anderson has spent a significant part of his working life in South East Asia; 'Tropical Trial' is the story of one job he took on and its aftermath.
It sounded simple, especially coming at a time when business was slow: really just moving a barge on behalf of the owner. The problem that caused such dramatic effects was that the barge was Singapore-registered but was in Indonesian waters, according to the Indonesian authorities. And as they had all the guns, it was their opinion that mattered.
Arrested far from home, in a different country, and imprisoned, the author faced a torrid period in a hellhole prison, where nobody bothered with accurate translations, where they bothered with translations at all, and his only wish was to get out and go home. The story of how he did so, legally, is told in this fascinating, captivating book: it was difficult, unpleasant and long-lasting, leaving the very clear impression that nobody would ever want to put themselves into a position where they could be thrown in an Indonesian jail.
Written by a talented writer, it is a book that grips the reader from beginning to end: it is highly recommended.

Flag McAndrew - Braid Anderson
When young Inglis McAndrew got the letter from the Admiralty, telling him that due to cutbacks and the increasing use of guided missiles, that fighter pilots were not being employed anymore, he was devastated. So he joined the Merchant Marine and went to sea as a Junior Cadet on board the Forth Venturer, and here his adventures were about to begin.
Along with Big John Souter, Aussie, Jimmy and the mysterious Donkeyman, Inglis began to get his first taste of real life. From the seedy sex clubs of The Reeperbahn in Hamburg, to Port Said, Inglis was to get a better education than any school or university could offer.
Falling in love in Sweden, getting beat up in France and playing a trick, which backfired seriously, on the Captain, Ingliss life was full of the type of wonders he had read about in the Boys Own comic. But one of the great lessons he did learn was this: You can sail the seas, swim in them and enjoy them, but you can never tame them and theyre always waiting to catch you off guard.
In this absolutely riveting rite of passage story we find ourselves engrossed with all the trials and tribulations that a seventeen year old good Scottish Baptist boy can take. Its a fabulous read from beginning to end and its very highly recommended. And the good news is, theres more of Flag to come.

Target Singapore - Braid Anderson
When Colonel Chris Teo of the Singapore Military Intelligence was given the brief to set up a new organisation, he was of course intrigued. This new force had been set up to investigate and, hopefully, stop the recent spate of terrorist activities that had been plaguing Singapore and its surrounding neighbours.
With Iain Brodie, Thumbs Green, Angie Patel and other soldiers recently trained by the British SAS-SBS, Chris Teo began uncovering a web of intrigue that went far beyond a few isolated bombings and shootings. It came to light that a new, deadly form of the HIV virus had been developed and was being carried by high-class call-girls who then sold their favours to political leaders all over the world. Not only that, a General Election was looming in Singapore and there was a plot brewing to assassinate the President. Meanwhile, Teos soldiers, now called Brodies Brats, were beginning to make their presence felt, and the brains behind the bombings were starting to get worried.
At the same time, a new French nuclear submarine was heading towards the Malacca Straights with a deadly payload and instructions to launch
This rip-roaring read by Braid Anderson is an absolute cracker from beginning to end and will keep the reader enthralled from the first sentence. Its highly recommended no, its very highly recommended.

The Castaway's Diary - Braid Anderson
Following on from Braid Andersons semi-autobiographical Tropical Trial, comes The Castaways Diary, recounting his years living in and around the Malaysian Peninsula. To anyone who has ever lived and worked in that part of the world, this terrific book will bring back lots of happy memories. It did for me at any rate.
For the person who has never been there, its a brilliant insight into how the locals live their lives and foreigners are treated. Full of wry and laconic humour, a touch of sadness here and there, especially at the end and stunning observations, this book is a truly wonderful read from beginning to end.
With this book, Braid has proved that not only can he write superb adventure stories, but that his observational writings are well up there with them. As with Braids other books, this one is very highly recommended.
