A Simple Poet - Brian CummiskeyA Simple Poet - Brian Cummiskey
Brian Cummiskey's first collection of poems may be entitled "A Simple Poet" but that perhaps does not do his work justice. The main theme of these poems is life as it was a generation ago, growing up in the environs of Glasgow and those poems are written in what Brian himself refers to as 'auld Scots'; it gives the poems a special charm.

Following those very Scottish verses are a selection of others including the haunting 'Play Me A Tune, Wee Mouthie' and 'A Dance Macabre', both eloquent comments on the reality of war.

This is a collection to treasure, one that will be enjoyed time and time again.

Wee Verses - Brian CummiskeyWee Verses - Brian Cummiskey
Poetry for children can be a real joy and this anthology from Brian Cummiskey is all the proof anyone could need. There's so much here, from fantastic pirates to monkeys who feel the cold, to wonderful childhood memories. The diversity is truly surprising, yet each poem is a little gem and there is the unmistakable atmosphere of Scotland permeating the whole collection. That's not to say it's only for little Scottish people because these poems will be enjoyed by children everywhere; grown-ups too could easily find them irresistable and a source of clandestine enjoyment!

Children who discover these poems may not be aware of it, but there is much that is educational in this collection: questions that might arise include why might monkeys living in Scotland feel cold, why it's always best to pay attention at school and more besides. But above all these poems are fun for developing minds!
