The Invisible Girl - Pradeep Kapoor
What do you do when you're just twelve years old, your father's out of town and your mother suffers a near-fatal asthma attack? Well, that's just the situation little Tina faced and she, being quite grown up, calmly called an ambulance. It was just the start of something rather wonderful.
With her mother in a deep coma and her father's job taking him away on long trips, Tina was sent to stay with her Uncle and Aunt. That was traumatic, in more than one way. But it led to her finding the magic mirror and, as if that wasn't exciting enough, learning how to become invisible!
Tina's adventure then really started: in this charming book Pradeep Kapoor follows the invisible Tina as she makes her way home alone and administers a magical cure to her mother. Reading the book is a delightful experience for grown-ups and children alike.

Escape From The Witch-House - Avanee Kapoor
This is the story of little Tanya Petrov, a girl who has an idyllic life with her loving parents. But it's an idyll that comes to a shattering end when her parents are killed in a road accident. Tanya's life is turned upside down; taken in by someone claiming to be her aunt Olga she swiftly finds that Olga is far from the benign old lady she appears to be. In fact she is a wicked witch!
Tanya's whole existence rapidly becomes one of pitiful misery, yet she is a resourceful girl. The story of how she plots and carries out her escape from Olg'a evil clutches is captivating enough for grown-ups - it will have younger readers totally enthralled.
Written by its author when she was just in her mid-teens, 'Escape From The Witch-House' shows just how good writing for children can be. We cannot recommend this story highly enough.

Woodland Magic - Paula George
Another delightful fantasy from Paula George, "Woodland Magic" brings together many of the characters from "The Way Of Things" quartet, mixes them with others from "Old Magic" then adds a few new ones of its own.
It is set in woodland - obviously - and is centered around an old oak tree. But this is not just any old tree. This one has four trunks and each is a Gateway into another dimension, another Realm. In charge is the Gatekeeper, normally the most reliable of beings, however something has gone wrong. Atropina Belladonna, has escaped from her carefully created prison and she's only got one thing on her mind - revenge - and that spells trouble for all sorts of people!
The story features the River Alun, which not only exists but flows through the woodland in which the story is set. The oak tree in the story exists also, complete with its four trunks. It is said that this particular woodland has wolves and bears in it to this day, and that it's where the lost treasure of a Celtic princess lies buried. Should anyone decide to go treasure hunting, though, they should beware. It might be true about the bears and wolves, and that oak tree just might be a real Gateway....

Old Magic - Paula George
Set in the north of Scotland and centred around an archaeological dig, "Old Magic" tells the story of two children who are fascinated - perhaps a little too fascinated - by the activities of the archaeologists.
Sometimes, digging into the past can have unforeseen circumstances: here, Paula George's inventive mind has woven a tale of long-buried forces of evil being released once more into the world, to be faced down by equally long-buried forces of good. It's a intense, exciting battle that produces the most unexpected of outcomes, changing the children's lives for ever.
This is a beautifully crafted story that will captivate its readers from beginning to end

Old Charlie - Chas & Paula George
You might think that Old Charlie is an affectionate name for a traction engine; it isn't, because it's the name of a splendid old chimpanzee who features in two of these delightful stories for young children.
The traction engine does appear though, along with a cast of many others in the collection. All the stories are inventive and captivating in their own way, and all are capable of stimulating impressionable young minds.

Wee Verses - Brian Cummiskey
Poetry for children can be a real joy and this anthology from Brian Cummiskey is all the proof anyone could need. There's so much here, from fantastic pirates to monkeys who feel the cold, to wonderful childhood memories. The diversity is truly surprising, yet each poem is a little gem and there is the unmistakable atmosphere of Scotland permeating the whole collection. That's not to say it's only for little Scottish people because these poems will be enjoyed by children everywhere; grown-ups too could easily find them irresistable and a source of clandestine enjoyment!
Children who discover these poems may not be aware of it, but there is much that is educational in this collection: questions that might arise include why might monkeys living in Scotland feel cold, why it's always best to pay attention at school and more besides. But above all these poems are fun for developing minds!

The Fairy Glen - Ricky Roberts
It's really quite incredible, but there are some people who refuse to accept the existence of "little people" living and prospering alongside humans! Sadly, when any of these non-believers get into positions of authority the outcome is likely to be tragic.
In this wonderful - and quite possibly true - story, a long-established group of "little people" co-exist perfectly adequately in their fairy glen alongside their human neighbours. Until, that is, one or two humans in positions of authority on the Council start having Bright Ideas. First, it's a bypass which takes away the "little people's" livelihood, but they can deal with that. Then, and far more seriously, their fairy glen is redeveloped!
As this charming story develops our own little ones will find themselves identifying with the "little people". They may well cheer out loud at the triumphs, perhaps even shed a tear at the tragedies, but will in the end be amazed by the sheer adaptability of those "little people". It is a story that will be read over and over again!

Captain Duffie And The Search For Nelson's Trousers - Patrick Street
When HMB Blackwater went down with all hands, just before the Battle of Trafalgar, it wasnt quite the end for her crew. They had inadvertently collided with The Condor, another ship of the line while delivering much needed supplies. The crew of Condor were all saved, but Blackwaters crew found themselves heading for a meeting with Davy Jones. But fate had other plans for Captain Duffie and his motley crew. Soon, Duffie, Bobo, Wilf, Stanley, Billy, Freddy and Whistler the ships cat and Morgan the parrot found themselves unable to enter Heaven. Because of their gross incompetence throughout their service (causing as much damage to the Royal Navy as the French and Spanish combined) they were to be court martialled by no lesser persons than Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, Captain James T. Cook and Sir Francis Drake.
Forced to spend the next two hundred years anchored off the Suffolk coast, the crew of Blackwater soon adapted to modern life, even though they were ghosts; until three children made friends with them. Soon they and their three mortal friends were to set off on an epic voyage to recover Admiral Nelsons artefacts which had been stolen, and stolen in the two hundredth anniversary year of the Battle of Trafalgar! Who could have perpetrated such a heinous crime? And why? The answer, when it came was a shock for all of them, including Nelson (who was fascinated by mountain bikes) and Cook.
In this wonderful story Patrick Street has created some superb and memorable characters and has woven a truly engrossing tale that will delight readers of all ages. Dont be surprised if you have a tear in the eye at the end which turns to tears of joy. We cannot recommend this book highly enough. To be frank, its brilliant.

Of Dragons And Dreams - Michael Raine
The story begins with the birth of a dragon. The dragon enters a world, strange to him, where everything is new and wonderful.
When he meets a small boy, he takes the opportunity to find out more about his world. However, the boy says he is really asleep in his bed in his house called The Beeches and so isnt really here at all. The boy goes on to claim that as it is only his dream, the dragon isnt there either. This provocative notion starts an argument in the course of which the unlikely pair become friends.
The boy tells the dragon what dragons are supposed to do. He also gives the baby dragon a name, Jeremy. Jeremy is alarmed to find that he cant behave at all as dragons should, especially not being able to blow fire and smoke.
The little boy, Peter John, offers to help his new friend do this. He suggests that if he can dream himself into Jeremys world, then perhaps Jeremy can dream himself into his world. They experiment with this idea and Jeremy and Peter John visit two circuses to consult a fire-swallower, the fire chief at a fire-station, the Ministry of Fuel and Power, and the Ministry of Defence. After a misunderstanding with this last and a disastrous military demonstration on Horse Guards Parade, which lands Peter John and Jeremy in trouble with M.I. Five and a Half, they decide the real world is both dangerous for and unhelpful to Jeremy.
Instead they start their search in Jeremys world where they encounter many strange creatures and wizards, most of whom are unhelpful. Finally they are directed to search for the dragons discarded eggshell, consuming which will enable Jeremy to grow and blow fire and smoke. Too late, they discover that all but one piece of the shell has been stolen by the Great Gorm, an evil sorcerer who lives in the Golden Mountain. They have to prevent this last piece from falling into the Great Gorms hands. After a struggle with some of his minions, the missing piece is recovered, Jeremy is able to eat a little of his egg and achieve his ambition.

All About Us - Michael Raine
Aline Deal is twelve, or thereabouts, and this is her autobiography. She wrote it herself.
If we're being totally honest, 'All About Us' is Michael Raine's idea of what family life might be like seen through the eyes of a rather precocious twelve year old girl. It's carried off wonderfully well as the reader gets sucked into Aline's world; it really is difficult to remember that the words aren't those of the narrator! The book is funny from beginning to end, appealing to all who claim to have a sense of humour. We've included it in our books for children as, although it may be a little difficult for younger children, its appeal to any child with a sufficiently developed attention span is quite plain. It realy is a book that will appeal to, and amuse, all ages.

The Old House - Michael Raine
The British stately home has been, in many cases, in decline for years. This is the story of one such house - used by its owners only sporadically, it spends most of its time locked up and empty, apart from the furniture. Michael Raine has invested the furniture with personality and with the ability to communicate, and envisages an empty house in which mirrors, statues and other furnishing discuss what can be done to bring human life back into the house.
It's an intriguing concept, beautifully written and executed, and one that will exercise the minds of younger readers whilst giving a gentle insight into the realities of economic life.

The Adventures Of Dinky The Donkey - Ralph Thomas
Young children have always enjoyed reading, or having read to them, stories about animals and donkeys really seem such child-like animals, don't they? Despite a reputation for occasional stubbornness (a trait which small children have been known to exhibit!) the donkey still enjoys its enduring popularity with the little ones.
Ralph Thomas has crafted some delightful stories around Dinky, a donkey who lives in a field where he befriends children on their way to and from school as well as other farm animals. They are beautifully written, easy to understand, gentle and, perhaps most importantly, show a differentiation between what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
Anyone who has young, pre-school even, children and wants to instil in them a love of the written word will find this little book an ideal starting point.

Beneath My Wings - Bob Bridge
Set in the 1960s and early 1970s, "Beneath My Wings" is a story of the friendship between John Path, a young man living in Scotland, and an eagle. It is a friendship born of John's gift of being able to talk to animals and understand them.
John introduces the eagle, who he calls Swift, to his girlfriend Jane, and finds that neither deserts him when he is struck down with polio. But Swift is captured and imprisoned in a zoo - that is, until John and his father set about releasing him.
Does John's act of kindness in returning Swift to the wild have anything to do with the 'miracle' that suddenly changes his life? Who, or what, is Swift really? The answers are to be found in this entertaining little book.
"Beneath My Wings" was first published in 1992 by Vantage Press Inc, New York, USA.

The Magic Field And Other Stories - John Tummon
Writing for children, and especially very young children, is difficult. There is nothing to be gained by avoiding the reality of life completely, yet care must be exercised to ensure that the result remains entertaining. One answer is to write for a specific child: knowing that child's likes and dislikes, and attitude to the harsher aspects of life that need to be learned, perhaps makes it easier to construct tales that achieve an acceptable balance. That is the course John Tummon has adopted here and it has produced a charmingly successful result.
Of the stories included, 'The £20 Note' may perhaps be a little advanced for the youngest children, but parents can make their own judgement; in any event it is but a small part of the total. The other stories will without doubt delight young and impressionable minds, just as they were written to do.

Gorgeous Gavin - Marigold Blythe
Bringing up children can be a difficult task, more so if the early days are mishandled. In this rather disturbing little book Marigold Blythe sets out the story of one little boy whose parents' actions set him off on a course that is to have tragic consequences for the child and others.
It is not a comforting work but the theories it expounds are well worth reading; a couple of pounds invested now might well save a great deal of future heartache.
