The eBookThe term e-book, which is also expressed as eBook or electronic book, is a digital version of a traditional text or book . Sometimes this description is used to mean the device on which the books may be read, which is in fact an eBook reader. eBooks and e-texts are a rapidly developing format of literature, and one which can be seen to have strong ecological motivation - text files downloaded to a computer or e-reader do not necessarily need to be printed out to be read. In a world of ever increasing documentation and written works, the eBook or electronic book enables us to download and read a book without visiting a bookshop or purchasing the paper text. Production There are e-books which are produced as publications in their own right without the production of a printed master, although this is still quite a new phenomenon. Other electronic books may be produced at the same time as a printed format book, being distributed through different media. Finally, many e-books are produced by scanning an original book, and converting the scanned file into a text file to allow download an easy storage. Other formats available are.prc for Mobipocket readers, DNL Readers, Image files, html, pdf, rtf, opf, Daisy or NISO, xml and TEI, CHM, TEX, .ps, DjVu, Microsoft LIT .pdb, .pkg, xeb or ceb, iPod, .lbr or .bin. If you wish to use these formats you will need to convert your downloaded files on your computer prior to use. The Advantages of eBooks and Electronic Book Publications The major feature of electronic books is the wonderully useful ability to search the text for references (apart from image books). They are relatively easy to store and may be read easily with low lighting. In addition the text may often be adjusted in size to suit the reader. They are inexpensive to purchase as compared with paper printed books, and offer the opportunity for correction and updating as the texts are amended and added to. In addition , much may be said for the fact that they are environmentally friendly, since the only resource they use is a small flow of electricity when in use. Many books conversely are printed which are never read. From a library's point of view they are the ideal medium since they cannot be vandalised or damaged over time. The E-book Industry Since the beginning of the 21st Century, most major print publishers have had some involvement in the production of electronic books. Many e-publishers are now also producing printed versions of eBook titles. There are bestseller lists in existence specifically for eBooks, and two annual awards are presented for eBook writers, notably the EPPIE Award and the Dream Realm Award.
